Barrister Varden Richard Edward (Esq.)
For R. Edward Chambers & Advocates

Good day,

I am Barrister Verden E. Richard personal attorney to Ronald Lake and Joyce Lake who use to work with Frank Howard Allen Realtors. On the 31st of January 2000, my client and his wife were involved in a Plane Crash (Alaska Airlines Flight 261) all passengers unfortunately lost their lives, since then I have made several enquiries to locate any of my client's extended relatives but this proved unsuccessful. You can read more about there death on this website below:

http://archives.cnn.com/2000/US/02/01/alaska.airlines.list/

After all these several unsuccessful attempts, since it's not compulsory that the next-of-kin must be a blood relation to the deceased, hence I contacted you because you are from the same country with my late client, I am ready to place you as the beneficiary/next of kin. Presently, the bank where the deceased (my client) made the deposit valued at £13,000,000.00 Million issued me a notice to provide the next-of-kin to my client to receive its benefit or have the account confiscated, or declared unserviceable by the bank.

To this effect, I now seek your consent to present you to the bank as the next of kin of the deceased (my late client) So that you and I can share the £13,000,000.00 Million; 50% to me and 40% to you, while 10% should be given to any Orphanage Home. I guarantee that this will be executed under a legitimate arrangement that will protect you from any breach of the law. Please get in touch with me via E-mail. verdenrichard@sify.com with the below details immediately you acknowledge the good receipt of this message,

Full Name,
Full Address,
Telephone/Fax Number,
Age/sex,
Occupation, and Country of Origin.

Yours sincerely,
Barrister Verden Edward Richard (Esq.)

Bottom line is that I'm not going to send you money because you will, in all likelihood, not do the work if I do. That is how 419 scams work. If, on the other hand, you answer my 39 questions - I'll send you a copy of my finished school report. My report might be a source of helpful information to you that might improve your art. Even if you don't find it useful - you might find it at least amusing.
What do you say? If you give me information - I'll give you information back.

Dear Sir,
Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my survey. I had contacted many other 419 Scammers and most of them just ignored me. Of the few who responded - most just insulted me or demanded ridiculous amounts of money in advance. You are the first to bother with actually answering the questions. Please send me your mailing address (it need not be your real address) so that I can send you a personal check for $50.00
I have some follow up questions (
in red ) that I'd like for you to answer (see below).
1) Which country do you work from?
--- Ghana
2) Which city do you work from?
--- Accra
3) How long have you been a 419 scammer (email scammer)?
--- 6yrs
4) How did you first get involved in 419 scamming?
--- I was introduced into it by a friend
5) How old were you when you started?
---21yrs
6) How old are you now?
--- 26yrs
7) About how much do you earn per month from 419 scams?
--- Not specific (it depends on luck)
(About how much did you make in March? This month is almost over, how much have you made so far this month?)
8) What is the average amount of money that you earn from a typical 419 scam?
---No specific Amount
(I'm just looking for a general amount. What is the average? For example if half the time you make $3,000 and the other half of the time you make $1,000 - then the average would be something like $2,000.)
9) What is the largest amount of money you have ever gotten from a single victim?
--- I personal has collected $3,500 some of my friend's has collected make over $200,000
10) Do you have another job/occupation or are you a "full-time" scammer? What is your other job?
--- No
(What did you do before being a scammer?)
11) About how many people have fallen for your scams altogether?
--- Over 50 but not all paid money.
(Of those 50 - how many did pay you something?)
12) What percentage of the emails that you send out get responded to? (For example - out of 1,000,000 emails, how many responses do you get?)
--- It depends on the type of email you send. If you send 1M emails you might get 5o replies.
(is that a "5" or "50"?)
13) Of those responses - how many fall for the scam and send you money?
--- It depends on the interest of the respondent.
14) What online services, websites and products do you use for 419 scamming? (For example, PayPal, PhotoShop, HotMail, ect...)
--- Any one can serve.
15) What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a 419 scammer like you?
--- It is not a good work.
(Then, why do you do it?)
16) What advice would you give to someone who wants to avoid being scammed by a 419 scammer like you?
--- Do not attempt to reply any email.
17) How did you learn to write and speak English?
--- In school
(What grade? Is English a typical part of a school's curriculum in Ghana?)
18) Where do you get the ideas for your 419 scams? (For example, do you make them up yourself or do you copy what other scammers have done?)
--- copy and some time develop some ideas depending on the situation on ground.
19) Are there any online communities, forums or message boards where you go to meet and chat with other scammers? (If so - please provide example URLs.)
--- we meet in cyber cafes to share ideas.
(It must be hard for you to trust each other in a group like that. Do you ever have problems with the other scammers trying to steal from you? Would they steal from you if given the chance?)
20) What part of your job do you like the most?
--- Talking on phone.
21) What part of your job do you hate the most?
--- writing to clients.

--- Transfer of fund.
26) Describe your typical 419 scam and briefly tell us how it works.
(You left this one blank. There is no need to go into too much detail - but a brief description would be nice. What is the process?)
27) What qualities are required to be a successful 419 scammer?
--- To be more educated like to have mater in phycology.
(Have you taken phycology classes?)
28) Do you ever feel guilty when you scam people? Why or why not?
--- Some times i fell guilty but i have no option because i have to live.
(Why can't you get a non-scamming job or go back to what you did before becoming a scammer?)
29) The majority of 419 scammers are from the western and southern parts of Africa... Why is that?
--- Nigeria, Ghana, south Africa, Benin ,Lome, Senegal etc.
(I know where, but I was asking you WHY? Why are so many scammers from Africa and so few are from other places like South America or Asia?)
30) Besides 419 scamming, what other crimes do you take part in? (For example - drug trafficking, counterfeiting, etc...)
--- Not other crime.
31) Have you ever been arrested? What for?
--- fraud. In a cafe.
(Was it for 419 scamming or some other type of fraud? What happened? Did you go to jail? What was your punishment? How did you get caught?)
32) Have you ever been "baited" or harassed by someone pretending to be a victim? How often does that happen? What do these"baiters" typically do?
--- kind of corse like fuck you , rost in hell or jail etc/
(Have they ever tricked you into wasting money on postage or on long-distance phone calls?)
33) Are you a religious person? Do you ever worry that, some day, God will punish you for scamming? Why or why not?
--- God is a merciful God. He know we are not doing it intentionally, we are doint it to survive. Africans are suffrring. If God has to punish humanity for its activities , he will first distory the white people for the slavery activities. They came to African steal and force them into there plantation without thier consent. They also rape and kill those that resist to there order.
(Most white people are not descended from slave owners. Do all white people deserve to be scammed? As far as you know - many of your victims might have been black or Asian. Do they deserve to be scammed too? The truth is that you will scam anyone who is foolish enough to fall for your scams - not just people who have harmed your country. Right? In fact - as far as you know, some of your victims might have donated a lot of there time and money to helping people in Africa, right?)
34) When you call a victim on the phone - how much does that cost you per minute?
--- It depens on the country you are calling..
(For example - how much does it cost per minute to call someone in the USA?)

--- work alone.
36) What is your online name? (Not your real name, but the fake name you are known online as.)
--- smith
37) What is your email address? (So I can send you a copy of my report and let you know what grade I got for it..)
--- send it in the same email.
38) Do you own the computer you work from or do you work from a cyber-cafe of some kind?
--- work in a cyber cafe.
(Don't you need to pay to do that? How much do you pay to rent a computer for an hour?)
39) Is there anything you would like to share that we have not covered so far? Anything you would care to add to this list of questions?
--- Do you know that most of us that are into this type of activities are graduates who has no other means of livelyhood. Most people in Africa live below 1 dollar a day. Most us us that are into this job are tying to collect what your grand father sold from our great grand fathers.
(For the record, my Grandfather was a potato farmer from Ireland who has never been to Africa.)

Here are some other questions that I thought of:
What do you call the people that you take money from? What terminology do you use when talking to another scammer? "Mark"? "Victim"? "Mugu"?
What do scammers call themselves? For example - when you are talking with another scammer what do you call each other? "Scammer"? "Con Artist"? "Player"?
Here are some of the suggested questions you proposed:
Why do you engage in such acts?
What is responsible for it? How did 419 start in Africa?

7) About how much do you earn per month from 419 scams?--- Not specific (it depends on luck) (About how much did you make in March? This month is almost over, how much have you made so far this month?) Sometimes you will not make any money in a month. That is why I said it is not specific. I have not made any money this month.
8) What is the average amount of money that you earn from a typical 419 scam? ---No specific Amount (I'm just looking for a general amount. What is the average? For example if half the time you make $3,000 and the other half of the time you make $1,000 - then the average would be something like $2,000.) $1,200
10) Do you have another job/occupation or are you a "full-time" scammer? What is your other job? --- No (What did you do before being a scammer?) Full time scammer for now till Iget a job.
12) What percentage of the emails that you send out get responded to? (For example - out of 1,000,000 emails, how many responses do you get?) --- It depends on the type of email you send. If you send 1M emails you might get 5o replies. (is that a "5" or "50"?) 50
15) What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a 419 scammer like you? --- It is not a good work. (Then, why do you do it?) I do it because it is a source to make quick and easy money.
18) Where do you get the ideas for your 419 scams? (For example, do you make them up yourself or do you copy what other scammers have done?) --- copy and some time develop some ideas depending on the situation on ground. I am from Nigeria? I live in Ghana to do scan because of the cheapness of internet there and constant electricity. But now I am back to Nigeria.
19) Are there any online communities, forums or message boards where you go to meet and chat with other scammers? (If so - please provide example URLs.) --- we meet in cyber cafes to share ideas. (It must be hard for you to trust each other in a group like that. Do you ever have problems with the other scammers trying to steal from you? Would they steal from you if given the chance?) There is no trust in the job, most time we fight because of money we make from client.

I have to stop here till u complies with the agreement. Bye

Very sorry, but I only just now read your email. It was sent to my "SPAM" folder so I did not find it till just now. I'm about to go to bed, I've already finished my report. I, obviously, don't have time to go to Western Union right now (it is almost 9:30pm here). I'll pay you with Western Union this weekend - there is an office in the mall.
I'll check my email in the morning - if you would be so kind as to answer the rest of the follow up questions by then - that would be great. I can print them out and add them to my report before I turn them in. I'm also very curious how you will answer the rest of the questions. I think my teacher will find your answers interesting too. He is originally from Africa himself (moved here when he was nine).

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX nigerian scams XXXXXXXXXXX

Name: Verden Ricahrd
Type: Next of Kin Scam
Plot: A lawyer has asked me to pose as the next of kin to his dead client so that we could share millions in unclaimed funds.
Commentary: This was another one of those baits where I ask the 419 scammer to answer a questionnaire. This time I was posing as a high school student who was doing a report about email scams for a computer class. The 419er would only provide the answers if I promised to pay him $50. "Verden" answered the questions - but I ran into several obstacles in my attempts to pay his fee.
Highlights: Check out the June 3rd email were I laugh right into Verden's fat little 419ing face (figuratively).

This document was sent to me from the scammer:
